What Is Internet Security and types of internet security

What Is Internet Security?

Internet security consists of a range of security tactics for protecting activities conducted online over the internet. These tactics are meant to safeguard users from threats such as hacking into computer systems. Internet security is a specific aspect of broader concepts such as cybersecurity and computer security. Many of our daily activities rely on the internet for communication, entertainment and financial and work-related tasks. The internet is mostly private and secure, but it can also be an insecure channel for exchanging information.

Types of internet security threats:

Cyberattacks are only increasing in sophistication and volume. Many cyber criminals use a combination of different types of attacks to accomplish are:

    • Malware – The malware comes in many forms, including computer viruses, worms, trojans and dishonest spyware, short for “malicious software.”
    • Computer worm – A computer worm is a programme that copies from computer to computer. To create these copies, it does not require human interaction and can spread quickly and in large amounts.
    • Spam – Spam refers in your email inbox to unwanted messages. In some cases, spam may just contain junk mail advertising goods or services that you do not want. These are usually regarded as harmless, but some may contain links that instal malware on your computer when you click on them.
    • Phishing – Cyber Criminals seeking private or sensitive information are creating phishing scams. You can choose your bank or web service and click on links to verify information such as account information or passwords.
    • Botnet – A botnet is a network of compromised private computers. These computers, which are infected by malicious software, can be controlled by one single user and can often engage in disastrous activities such as spamming or denial of service (DoS) attacks.

Choosing the right internet security tactics:

It’s important to consider several types of internet security strategies when taking proper measures.

  • Browser selection – Each browser contains its own security measures, but some may have serious flaws which allow the exploitation and invasion of hackers and cyber crime. Make sure you use a secure browser to reduce your computer or network risk.
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA): MFA is a computer access control method by requiring a mechanism of authentication to have several different pieces of evidence. You can secure your websites and e-mail accounts by requiring at least two user authentication factors.
  • Email security – Email gives virus, worm, trojan, and other undesirable programmes an opportunity. The creation of an integrated multi-layered email security strategy will help to reduce exposure to new threats significantly. E-mail messages can also be protected by using cryptography, such as email signing, e-mail body encryption and communication encryption.
  • Firewall – Firewall act as filters to protect devices by enabling or refusing network access. By implementing a certain set of rules, firewalls can avoid the stolen of sensitive information, and prevent the integration of malicious code into the networks.
